2012 ONE MOUNTAIN FOUNDATION EVENTS

December 1, 2012  -  2nd Annual Community Tree Lighting

and Fun with Santa

The One Mountain Foundation held its annual  Mountaintop Community Tree Lighting and Fun with Santa activity from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on December 1, 2012 at the Fort Ritchie Community Center and on the Parade Field on the Fort Ritchie property in Cascade, Maryland.  The event was free and open to the public.  Over 200 children of all ages to included parents, grandparents, and friends participated in the activities.

A large evergreen on the east end of the historic Fort Ritchie parade field was decorated with hundreds of lights.  The program for the event included various children games and fun activities for multiple age groupings with prizes awarded to game winners, musical selections performed and led by students from the Cascade Elementary School, and the lighting of the Mountaintop Community Tree.  Santa met with over 60 children for photos and to hear "wishes" from them.  Delicious refreshments were served.

This event rekindles memories of similar measures in the community and on the Fort Ritchie property from years past.  The PenMar Development Corporation and the Fort Ritchie Community Center co-sponsored the event.

The One Mountain Foundation is a tax-exempt, non-stock corporation with a focus to promote and support educational programs, historical preservation, community improvement projects, cultural activities, and special projects that benefit the Mountaintop area.  This was the last formal OMF hosted event for 2012 and ends a highly successful year in terms of the number of events held and the amount of funds provided to or raised by local mountaintop non-profit organizations as a result of OMF's various activities.

April 13 and 14, 2012  -  5th Annual Spring Dinner Theater,

"Boeing Boeing"

The One Mountain Foundation hosted their 5th Annual Spring Dinner Theater with a production of "Boeing Boeing", a 1960's French farce adapted for the English-speaking stage.  The play was presented by the Blue Ridge Theatre Guild in a dinner theater format, held at the Blue Ridge Summit Pennsylvania Fire Hall on Friday and Saturday evenings, April 13th and April 14th with a show only matinee on April 14th.  The dinner buffet was provided by the Mountain Gate Family Restaurant.  This production was directed by Cathy Snesrud.  It was an important event for the One Mountain Foundation and started the fifth year sponsorship of a spring dinner theater on the mountaintop.  The Blue Ridge Fire and Rescue Squad donate the use of their building, and Alice and her committee, with the help of the Blue Ridge Garden Club, turned the fire hall into a beautiful theater for the weekend.  It was a fun filled evening with the proceeds going to support the One Mountain Foundation Scholarship Fund and the Blue Ridge Theatre Guild.

Plot:  Bernard, a successful Parisian architect, juggles three flight attendant fiancées:  an American woman (Janet), a French woman (Jacqueline) and a German woman (Judith).  He tracks their airlines' timetables, and his long-suffering housekeeper, Bunter, reluctantly resets the menus and bedroom decor depending on the arrivals and departures.  Bernard has been successful at convincing each woman that she is the only one.  Bernard's old school friend Robert arrives unexpectedly, and Bernard proudly explains to his wide-eyed visitor how he makes his busy romantic schedule run smoothly.  He also has a fallback plan for keeping his fiancées separate, involving his country house.  Unfortunately for Bernard, a new, faster Boeing jet has been introduced, changing the timetable.  Weather delays occur, and complications arise when the women's behavior does not match Bernard's careful planning.  Robert steps in to help Bernard by keeping one or more of the women busy as they arrive ahead of (or behind) schedule.  It becomes more and more difficult for Bernard, Bunter and Robert to keep the women separate once they all arrive, and the lies told become more and more difficult to reconcile.  Bunter is exhausted and threatens to quit.  Eventually, the situation is combed out, with Robert becoming involved with the forceful Judith, Bernard keeping the feisty Jacqueline, and the independent Janet leaving to find a more pliable husband.

June 30 and July 1, 2012  -  7th Annual Mountaintop Heritage Days

The 7th Annual Mountaintop Heritage Days was held on Saturday June 30th and Sunday July 1st in Blue Ridge Summit, PA and Cascade, MD.  After three years of super weather for our annual event, the weather was not as kind to us this year.  Friday night's storm felled most of the canopies of the vendor's who sat up on Friday as well as our main tent.  Fortunately the stage covering held thanks to Warren Suker's expertise in putting up the scaffolding and tying down the covering.  Most of the porta-potties were blown over.  Thanks to the Civil War Living Historians encamped by Lake Royer for uprighting them right after the storm, and to Witter's Septic & Sanitation for coming in at 4:30 a.m. to insure that all were cleaned and ready for use when we officially opened.  And then the heat and threat of storms really kept attendance down all day on Saturday.

A large number of photographs are available for the various activities.  Thanks to Richard Dougan, the Herald-Mail and The Record Herald for use of their photographs.  A special thank you to Kristin Kendall (kmkphotostudio.com) for her photos of the Children's Fishing Rodeo.  This year's activities included:

   Help Hotline and Hope Alive.

There are bright spots to this year's Mountaintop Heritage Days.  The camel rides and petting zoo provided by the Catoctin Wildlife Preserve & Zoo were a great hit with the children and their parents.  The camel ride was the focus of Hagerstown's The Herald-Mail's article in Sunday's newspaper (also on their web site).  The World War II Living Historians were few, but had a lot of traffic with people stopping by their tents and talking.  We hope to expand their participation next year.  And the Children's Fishing Rodeo on Sunday morning was a great success.  Seeing the smiles and hearing the laughter of the children as they caught fish, some for the first time ever, can't be put in words.

Thanks to all who worked on this year's events, especially to Nina Rouzer and Jeff Coyle.  Nina, in addition to coordinating all the vendors, has become our Operations Officer.  Having signs made, getting them out throughout the event area, tracking rented equipment, coordinating all the volunteers, the list goes on and on.  Jeff must know everyone by name who lives here on the mountain, even the half that isn't his family, and was instrumental in bringing many to "volunteer" their time and sweat in performing all the many tasks that is needed to conduct an event of this size.  A special thanks also goes to Johnny Cosgrove of Master Display Ltd. for the outstanding fireworks show and to the coordinators of various activities:  to Bev Coyle for conducting the Parade that went for the first time from Blue Ridge Summit down MD 550 through Cascade onto the Fort Ritchie property and for arranging for the children's rides and the boating on the lake; to Donnie Forest for coordinating the steam engines; to Donna Pryor for coordinating the car show; to Roger Sternberg, Paul Mummert, Frank Mummert, and Letha Grimes (from the DNR Fisheries Service) for coordinating and conducting the Children's Fishing Rodeo; to the Community Pastors for holding a Community Worship Program; to the U.S. Army Garrison Fort Detrick Color Guard, Pastor Arietta Grimmett, members of the Venture Crew 18, Cub Pack 218 and Boy Scout Troop 18, and Brett Smith and the Williamsport Community Band under the direction of Susie Kunkle for the Salute to the Military program; and to the One Mountain Foundation Board Directors and the One Mountain Foundation members for facing the weather straight on and making the event a success.  Thanks to all our volunteers and to all who braved the heat to come out.  Hope all had a great time!

Sponsorship for this year's events include the PenMar Development Corporation, Specialty Granules Inc., the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Sons of the American Legion Post #239, First Command Financial Services, McLaughlin's Heating Oils & LP Gas, and the Fort Ritchie Community Center.  The One Mountain Foundation wishes to thank all of our generous sponsors for their support.

September 28 and 29, 2012  -  5th Annual Fall Dinner Theater,

"A Nice Family Gathering"

The One Mountain Foundation will host their 5th Annual Fall Dinner Theater with a production of A Nice Family Gathering by Phil Olson, a modern "A Christmas Carol" meets "All in the Family".  The play will be presented by the Blue Ridge Theatre Guild in a dinner theater format to be held at the Blue Ridge Summit Pennsylvania Fire Hall on Friday and Saturday evenings, September 28th and September 29th and a show only matinee on Saturday September 29th.  Doors for the evening shows will open at 6:00 p.m. with dinner served at 7:00 p.m. and the show starting at 8:00 p.m.  The doors will open for the Saturday matinee at 1:15 p.m. with the show starting at 2:00 p.m.

The evening performance tickets are $40.00 per person and $30.00 for students which includes a buffet dinner provided by the Mountain Gate Family Restaurant.  The matinee tickets are $25.00 per person and $10.00 for students.  Tickets are available from any One Mountain Foundation Board member or by calling Alice Humphrey at 717-794-5121 or Nina Rouzer at 717-794-0061.  Groups and advance seating is available by also calling either Alice or Nina.

The play is about a Minnesota family gathering for Thanksgiving dinner — the first such gathering since the death of the father ten months ago.  He was a busy man, Dr. Lundeen, so busy that he never managed to tell his wife how much he loved her.  Now he’s back, as a ghost at the feast, and he wants to let her know how he felt.  There are just a couple problems: only his son, Carl, can hear or see him, and Carl’s not that enthralled with the idea of helping his old man.  After all, in life, Carl Sr. was rather a distant man, and not, in Junior’s eyes, much of a father.  The other problem is that Mrs. Lundeen has invited a date to supper.  This exciting production is directed by Tom Rogers and promises loads of laughs.

This production is an important event for the One Mountain Foundation and completes the fifth year sponsorship of a fall dinner theater on the mountaintop.  The Blue Ridge Fire and Rescue Squad donate the use of their building, and Alice and her committee turn the fire hall into a beautiful theater for the weekend.  It's a fun filled evening with the proceeds going to support the One Mountain Foundation Scholarship Program and the Blue Ridge Theatre Guild.

October 28, 2012  - 3rd Annual Community Harvest Celebration

The pastors of nine mountaintop churches in Cascade and Sabillasville, Maryland and Blue Ridge Summit and Fairfield, Pennsylvania will host an old-fashion community harvest celebration on October 28, 2012 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Fort Ritchie Community Center in Cascade, Maryland.  The purpose of the celebration is to recall the many wonderful memories of times gone-by when most churches held festivals in the fall to celebrate the bounty of the harvest and give thanks for the gift of life.  This gathering brings the mountaintop communities together to share in a celebratory program of great music, a time of praise and testimony for God's goodness to us, and great tasting seasonal pies.  The music planned for the program covers a broad range of appeal, to include bluegrass, traditional and contemporary worship style music.  And a showcase of pies will be available for all to enjoy with lemonade and hot apple cider.  The public is invited to join in this celebration for an afternoon of fellowship, great music, and fabulous food.  The event is free, but all are requested to bring a donation of non-perishable food or paper product for the Help Hotline (mountaintop community food bank).

This will be the second combined community church event for 2012.  The first event was the June Mountaintop Heritage Day's Community Worship Service.  These experiences have brought people in the community together and provided an opportunity for all to interact and get to know one another.  The pastors desire to see an even greater sense of community and connectedness among all who live here on the mountaintop.  This old-fashion community harvest celebration is another opportunity for our friends and neighbors to interact with one another and have fun, enjoy fellowship, good music and great food at the same time.

The pastors and churches involved are Pastor Janet Comings, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and St. John’s United Church of Christ and Pastor Gary Cox, WCF Church, Sabillasville; Pastor Richard Daughtridge, Jacob’s Church, Fairfield; Pastor Arietta Grimmett, Cascade Community Fellowship, Pastor Mark Hosler, Germantown Church of God, Pastor Sandy Price, St. Stephen’s United Church of Christ, Pastor Kurt Schroder, New Hope Baptist Church, Cascade; Father Robert Malagesi, St. Rita Catholic Church, and Pastor Warren Rice, Living Word Church, Blue Ridge Summit.

The Fort Ritchie Community Center, the One Mountain Foundation, and the Sons of the American Legion Post #239 are assisting in support of this celebratory program.
